Chrysler Repair: 2001 T&C ATC blower problem, chrysler town and country, wire jumper


Question
On a 2001 Chrysler Town and Country w/automatic heat control. The blower for the heat/air does not work at all. The indicator lights around the blower speed dial works. I checked the fuses & swapped the front blower with the rear blower relays in the fuse panel. The rear blower works when I switch to rear control. Is the problem in the blower switch?

Hi Gene,
There are several possibilities: the fuse, the switch, the blower motor power module, or the blower motor itself.
Did you verify that fuse #10 (40 amp) doesn't have a subtle crack in it? If you have a voltmeter check that there is voltage on both sides of the fuse when you have the ignition in 'run' and the control panel 'on' (which should cause the relay to close) and thus produce voltage on fuse 10. If not let me know.
If that is OK, then open the glove box and squeeze on both sides near the top of it so as to allow the box to rotate out of the opening and give you access to the air duct behind the box where you will find a couple plugs mounted in the duct when you look through the opening. Those are plugged into the blower power module which is responsible for producing the variable voltages that power the blower at the variable speeds. One plug has 2 wires and one plug has 3 wires. Unplug the 3-wire plug and find the dark blue wire on the 3-wire plug and verify that it has voltage on it, again with the ignition on run and the control on. Let me know if there isn't.
Then unplug the 2-wire plug and using jumper wire from the dark blue wire on the 3-wire plug to the dark blue wire on the 2-wire plug, and a 'ground' wire jumper from the black/orange wire of the 3-wire plug to the dark blue/yellow wire of the 2-wire plug see if the blower works when the igntion is in run and the control panel is 'on', which it should if the blower is good. If it is good, then I would suspect that the blower module itself (mounted in the duct with 2 screws) is defective. It can only be tested by use of a diagnostic readout box at a dealer, but my belief is that it is higly likely that it rather than the switch is what is defective.
But in any case try this set of tests and let me know the results and then we can review them before you buy anything or go to a dealer.
