Chrysler Repair: Water Pump Replacement: 3,3/3.8L Engine, water pump replacement, chrysler voyager

Question
Roland,

Sorry for having so many questions on the same vehicle, but your experience puts this vehicle is right up your alley.  I need to know the rough procedure and estimated time to replace a water pump on a 2003 Chrysler Voyager Minivan with the 3.3L engine.  Dealers are getting around $500.00 to do the job, so it's probably pretty involved.  Thanks for your expertise and time!!!

Answer
Hi Rich,
It is really not as involved as with other engines these days which require that the timing belt (which drives the pump) be removed. That is much more expensive. On the 3.3/3.8 that pump mounts to the timing chain case cover by a rubber seal and is driven by an accessory belt. The main trick is how to manipulate various parts to remove it. There are a couple of pages in '02 manual which I can xerox and postal mail to you that list the steps and has some useful illustrations.
After draining the system. My '02 manual says that to get the space, you have to first remove the water pump pulley bolts, then rotate the pulley so that it meshes with the 'spokes' of the pump hub and then you can gain the purchase needed for removal.
Begin draining the coolant then remove the accessory drive belt splash shield so you can see the front of the pump/pulley. You remove the 3 water pump pulley bolts, then rotate the pulley so that its openings align with the pump hub "spokes" which allows the pulley to move inward toward the pump, Then rotate the pulley/hub so as to allow you to remove the pump mounting bolts. Then with the pulley loosely sitting between the hub and the pump body you should have room to remove the pump.
Install is the reverse. Tighten pump bolts to 105 inch-pounds, tighten pulley to hub bolts to 250 inch-pounds.
Let me know if you want the pages to do the job yourself.
