BMW Repair: 93 325 Remote lock leaving on lights, transmission control module, bmw e36

Question
Thank you for the reply.  It did the same thing with the key.  I discovered it was from shorted out wires going into the top of the trunk.  It is a problem common to the BMW E36 chassis.  (A google search of 'e36 wiring problem' has it as top result http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=79896).  8 of the 10 wires there had broken insulation in the same place and one wire was nearly broken.  Placing electrical tape over has fixed the problem

Now the problem is the transmission control module (TCM) light comes on after 10-15 minutes of driving putting the car in 'limp home mode' AKA 3rd gear.  The light came during 3 short drives, then didn't come on the next 4 trips, it came on the last 2 drives.  Turning the car off and restarting after a few seconds resets the light.

I have read that possible solutions to this are: 1. Cleaning the contacts on the TCM
2. Reseting the car's computer by removing the battery and connecting the car's battery cables together for 2 hours (effectively shorting the car).
3. Replacing the TCM.

I would like to try cleaning the TCM's contacts but I do not know where it is located.

My brother just got a 1993 325is and has a problem with the remote alarm/locks.

When I push the button to lock the doors after exiting, it lights up the dash board, center console, and the rear lights over the license plate.  I thought they would go off on their own, but they stayed on and the battery was dead.  I charged the battery and tested it out;  When exiting the car and closing the door, the lights are off.  When I lock the doors the lights come on, but if I use the unlock the doors, the lights go off.  This also happens when locking/unlocking with the key in the driver's side door.

How can I lock the doors without draining the battery?

Answer -
Does locking the door with the key have the same affect? If not I would say the remote module.

Answer
It sounds like the wiring needs to be looked at,having the first problem and finding wires that the insulation being bad is an indication of more to come.Recheck your wiring as this problem hadn't happened until you TAPED the wiring.A proper repair, needs to be done.
