Chrysler Repair: 2000 Cirrus: trans down-shifts, independent shop, shop manuals

Question
i have a 2000 cirrus that always worked perfect, but lately it started to down shift hard from overdrive back to regular drive, doesn't do it in any other gear, fluid is full.up shifts perfect. just that one gear. any advice?

Answer
Hi Jimmy,
The quickest way to start the process of fixing the trans is to get a fault code readout of the controller's memory. It probably has store a 4-digit code which will be the start of a diagnosis. An Autozone parts store will often do that for free, or try another parts store; and independent shop will do the readout for less than $40. Once you get the number, ask what it means, what is recommended to do, and the price. Then write back with a follow-up question and tell me the fault code number and we can compare notes with the shop manuals.
The down-shift is likely to 2nd gear not regular drive, and if so, that is called 'limp-in mode'. It does this when a problem is detected which if allowed to go on will cause unnecessary further damage.
