Chrysler Repair: crank sensor voltage: 12V?, crank pulley, crank sensor

hi i have a 97 dodge neon DOHC that ive been working on its my little toy i put a stand alone engine management system in it,  my question is the car wont start its not receiving crank signal. i ran a new signal wire and new power wire to the crank sensor and it worked well for a while but now im back to the same problem. when i ran the new power wire i took power from a 12 volt switched source. could that burn out the crank sensor if its only meant for 8 volts?

Yes, I can imagine that it would do that, though I can't be certain. I imagine if it could run on 12v that would have been the supply voltage they would supply it with so the fact that it runs on 8 must mean that it won't run on 12. So find another 8v supply either at the cam sensor or at the original 8v multi-wire splice which is at the rear area of the engine/trans: it looks to be directly above the trans's vertical shift rod, in a multi wire harness that then goes to the headlamp/dash areas. Look for other orange wires in that area to splice into. And then I suspect that the sensor may be shot. The other possibility is that the input for the sensor at the pcm is shot, but let us hope that is not the case for that would mean finding a replacement pcm. It the sensor is working you should see a voltage on the other two wires that varies between 5V and 0.3V as you turn the engine over by hand using a socket and ratchet on the crank pulley, and of course with the ignition switch in the run position. If you have that pulsing then you should get spark, and if not then check that you have signal at the pcm itself measuring between pins 32 and 43. This would verify that the wires are patent between the sensor and the pcm. If no spark, nonetheless, then check for fault code using the ignition key "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then count the flashes of the check engine light and get back with the results.
