Chrysler Repair: 1994 Chrysler New Yorker Voltage Regulator, chrysler new yorker, field coils


Question
Is the voltage regulator for my car in the ECU or is it seperate? My husband thinks some of the problems that I am havinig with the car are due to the voltage regulator, but it can not be changed without replacing the entire computer.

Hi Jodie,
The voltage regulation is provided by the ecu on single dark green wire that goes from pin 20 of the ecu to the alternator. It either has 12V or ground on it, or oscillates, to produce the proper output voltage. The other item needed is 12V on dark green/red wire at the alternator.
So check those out before doing anything about the ecu. It could be that the field coils of the alternator are shorted to ground. Try the ignition switch: on-off-on-off-on and leave on, doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Count the numbers for flashes of the check engine light, between each pause in the flashing, then tell me the counts in the order of appearance. That may tell us something about the problem. In any case, I would not replace the ecu to solve this issue until I checked these other possibilities.
