Chrysler Repair: 2001 Sebring LXI a/c problem, r 134 refrigerant, 2001 sebring lxi

Question
My 2001 Sebring LXI's a/c only works when the engine is cold.  Every time I try the a/c when the engine is cold it works great, but after about 5-10 min it cuts out and only blows hot air. I have had electrical problems with this car in the past.  Is there anything I can do or check so I do not get hosed at a a/c shop?

Answer
Hi Eric,
I suspect that it is simply a matter of being low on refrigerant. There is a sensor of the pressure level of that gas and the temperature of the gas changes as you use the system such that when it has been in use for a while it probably no long will maintain the pressure level necessary to give the "ok" to the compressor to keep operating. That is a way the system protects itself against damage due to low pressure. If you believe that your system is properly charged than the tranducer that measures the pressure may be inaccurate. You can buy R-134 refrigerant in a canister and a hose adapter to put it into the system by yourself. But get instructions for doing it.
