Chrysler Repair: Cirrus with vacuum issue, vacuum diagram, vacuum leak

Question
Kevin,

My girlfriends 95 Cirrus(I know you said 96 and up but they are similar and Roland is on vacation) has what I believe to be some sort of vacuum leak. The car stumbles and quits when started. I can make the car run, albeit very very rough, by playing with the piston on the EGR valve. I have replaced the valve just today along with the solinoid, with no success. I do not have a vacuum diagram for the car and cannot see the one under the hood as its in unreadable shape.

I can hear some sort of "pump" noise behind the dash on the drivers side after disconnecting the batter and then reconnecting it and trying to start the car.

No check engine codes other than 12 for the battery disconnect within the last 50 key starts, which is accurate.

Any help would be much appreciated so we can get this junker running and trade it in tomorrow!

Answer
Hi Justin,
I have the '96 vacuum diagram and would be pleased to xerox copy and mail it to you if you will send me your postal mailing address. You might also find it on-line at Autozone.com where that have do-it-yourself library of essential data.
If you can probe a bit further into the source of the pumping sound I might be able to identify whether this is abnormal or not. Of course the fuel pump located inside the fuel tank is programmed to run when you turn the key to the 'run' position but then it cuts out after a second or so if the engine is not cranked as a safety precaustion against fire so as not to have the pump running when the engine is a dead stop for example were there to be an accident. I suspect that you either have a vacuum hose issue, or perhas a MAP sensor that has gone inaccurate but not so much as to 'set' a code which then messes up the mixture for idling.

PS: I hope that you are more commited to the vehicle than just to have it going in order to trade it in.
