Chrysler Repair: 2000 Sebring Convertible slow coolant leak, cylinder head bolts, oil drain plug

Question
I have a slow coolant leak on passenger side.  It is drippng down from just above oil pan drain plug Is this where the water pump weep hole is or something different?

Answer
Hi Paul,
The water pump is hidden from view, being located on the front of the engine about in the middle just below the V of the two banks of cylinders and behind the timing belt cover. If that were leaking from the 'weep hole' or the pump shaft it would more likely drip out the front of the engine than the side facing the firewall which is where I presume this is happening as the oil drain plug is on that side too, correct? If it seems to be coming from the seam between the block and the cylinder head on that side of the engine then I would wonder if there is a leak at the head gasket because there are water passages between the block and the head that require a water-tight seal which is done by the head gasket. It may be, it that were the case, that you could remove the intake manifold and then the valve cover on the rear bank of cylinders and simply tighten down the cylinder head bolts with the hope that one of them nearby has loosened up enough to let the coolant leak out between the gasket and the head or block. The torque spec for the bolts is 80 foot-pounds and is done clockwise from inside to outside bolts. I have successfully cured small leaks like that when bolts spontaneously loosened slightly.
Another possibility is that the inlet pipe to the water pump which runs down the groove between the banks of cylinders (from the rear of the engine to the front where it enters the pump) is leaking from the o-ring that seals the pipe and the pump. That too would require removing the intake manifold and replacing the o-ring. But that typically will leak first from the rear of the engine at the far end from the pump at the groove of the V, not where you are describing the leak to be. So that is less likely. I don't know of any other source of leaks at the point you are describing but look carefully.
If the leak is really slow, you might try using a stop leak compound in the cooling system such as Bar's Leak which can successfully plug small head gasket and o-ring leaks. It is worth a try.
