Chrysler Repair: 1991 New Yorker Vehicle Speed Sensor, vehicle speed sensor, cruise control

Question
I just bought a 1991 New Yorker and the speedometer and odometer is not working. The cruise control is working. I think it might be the Vehicle Speed Sensor. I need to know where it is located. I was told it is on the transmission so I tried looking and thought I found it but it wasn't. I really don't want to just start unconnecting things and mess something up that is working good due to the age of the car. So any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Ken,
It is located on the top of the transaxle extension housing, which is the part out of which the half-shafts extend which drive the wheels. Look behind the engine from the drive side and you should see a wire running down to that area which is a little above the axis of the wheels. The sensor is held in place by a screw. Lift the sensor out (you may have to pry on the edge with a screwdriver) and there you will find a speedometer pinion gear which is what you will want to replace.
The only problem with this scenario (that the sensor is the problem) is that the speed control unit needs the sensor as well to operate properly, so I am thinking that the problem is in the speedo/odo in the cluster itself, and may be a gear which is driven electrically. Is this a conventional or an electronic cluster? If it is conventional then you would want to get replacement drive gear from a site called odometergears.com, but you would want to open it first to see if that is the cause and which gear you need.
