Chrysler Repair: fault code, smog test, torque converter

Question
I have a 96 Dakota p/u V8, a code is showing up (Part throttle unlock solenoid driver circuit) what does this mean.

Answer
Hi Brenda,
That code refers to the torque converter which connects the engine to the transmission not responding by either locking or unlocking the two turbines that constitute the converter mechanism when requested to do so by the computer. Depening upon if you have the conventional 3-speed automatic or the electronic 4-apeed automatic transmission would say whether this is an electrical or an hydraulic issue or an issue with the internal mechanism that does the locking. You would notice it if when you get to cruising speed you don't sense an final mini-shift when the rpm should drop slightly which indicates the locking or if as you slow down from cruising the engine dies because the rpm drops to too low a speed because the turbines are locked together when they shouldn't be. From a practical point of view the failure to lock up just results in a slight loss of fuel economy. If it doesn't prevent you from driving it or from passing smog test then I wouldn't be too concerned.
