Chrysler Repair: 99 Sebring surging forward w/o accelerating, gear shift, odometer

Question
My '99 Sebring has 15,000 actual miles. Twice in the last week it suddenly surged forward. Once in a parking lot, my first action was to hit the brakes hard and then just as suddenly it quit surging forward. The 2nd time I was approaching a stop light, my foot was off the accelerator and it started surging forward again. This time I slipped the gear shift to neutral and once again it stopped surging with no engine racing after perhaps a second or two. The only thing that had been done to the car lately was an oil change and a new battery installed. I know this could be serious but do you have thoughts on what could be causing this to happen and will diagnosing this problem be difficult and/or expensive since it has only happed twice. Thank you for any information.

Answer
Hi Ted,
The best thing is to get any fault codes that may be stored in the memory. Use the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window to see if the mileage reading changes to show instead 4-digit fault codes numbers, preceeded by a P. If so, let me know what those numbers are. If there is a stored code resulting from that false acceleration it should be stored.
