Chrysler Repair: Multiple power failures New Yorker Fifth Avenue, stereo fuse, low beams

Question
Roland,

First thanks for your help.

New Yorker Fifth Avenue 1990, front wheel drive, power locks, power windows, power seats, 3.0 V6 cyl.

I was helping a man jump his car and before I could grab the cables he touched them to the wrong terminals on my battery. (I know, don't let anyone touch my battery cables.)

At first, the battery would not hold a charge but the problem was not the battery. I changed the alternator and the battery is holding a charge. Next thing that happened, my speedometer kept reading that I was going 150 miles per hour (US) when I was going 30 -40 mph. Now my dash lights won't work at all.

Problems:
1-No dashlights - I cannot find a fuse or relay that controls the dashlights. (The four ways and turn signals are the only lights that do work.) My main problem on the dash lights is knowing what to try.

2-Auto door locks not working - I think that it is relay-module "E". I plan to change it tomorrow.

3- No radio - radio will not play, no lights, no power at all. Is the only thing that controls the stereo fuse #20. Stereo is the the factory installed stereo.

4-driver side low beams - I plan on changing fuse #3. (Correct?)

For now, these items are all I can find that won't work. (knock on wood!)

I really appreciate your help because my local shops want to change out the entire computer and electrical system. They wouldn't even replace the alternator on their own until I insisted. They said it won't work and it was fine. When I put in on a voltage meter it kept jumping like crazy. But now with a new one in, my car has been running.

I read about the power distribution box under the hood. (written by you here http://en.allexperts.com/q/Chrysler-Repair-807/2008/9/90-New-Yorker-Fifth.htm) I do not have any info in my manual about this, could any of these fuses run the dash.

Again, THANKS! :)

Answer
Hi Christine,
The instrument cluster has a separate fuse, #5 20 amp, in the box under the dash so that will probably fix that problem.
If by 'auto door locks' you mean simply the power door locks not working then I would check circuit breaker #2 in the relay box that is above the under dash fuse box (lower right corner) and also check fuse #13 in the under dash fuse box.
On the radio, see if checking the above fuses doesn't also fix it.
Correct, on the low beam fuse #
Please let me know what doesn't get corrected.
