Chrysler Repair: gear shift lock button: 96-00 Neon, storage cubby, postal mail

Question
I have a 2000 Neon, automatic, and the gear shift will not shift out of  park when the button is pressed.
The car starts okay, but I cannot shift gears.  I am able to shift the gears by turning the key to the first position and taking the car from "park" to "neutral" and starting the car in neutral, with my foot on the brake of course.
I have been searching your site for this problem, but after searching for an hour or so, I decided to ask for your help.  It would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Pat

Answer
Hi Pat,
The shifter with button was evidentally used up to '00 so I would believe that the '97 manual which I have would apply. I suspect that you need to make an adjustment in the gear shift cable. There is a page in the manual that describes and shows the parts that are involved which I can xerox and postal mail to you if you would like. Just give me a postal mailing address to which to send. Also tell me whether the center console in your car's console does (with a storage cubby), or does not, have an arm rest as that affects how to remove that console to get to the area of adjustment.
