Chrysler Repair: 1997 Dodge stratus 2.4 idle problem, powertrain control module, dodge stratus

Hello Kevin, I have a 97 dodge stratus with a 2.4. It has a high idle while out of gear, around 2k rpm's, runs smooth though. When putting in gear vehicle will drop down to 1k rpm's and start to run rough. I am completely lost, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi John,
Try to get the fault code that may be stored in the Powertrain Control Module memory. Turn the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time.
Then watch the check engine light to see if it begins to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat to be sure of an accurate count. Then let me know the counts in order of appearance. If this doesn't happen then go to an Autozone parts store where they will do a free readout of the codes using a plug-in reader.
