Chrysler Repair: 1998 Breeze: gremlins in left rear light fixture, left turn signal, printed circuit board

Question
When I turn on the headlights the rear left turn signal won't work and the left break light comes on and turns off when I apply the break.  I have replaced the multi function switch and have no idea what else could be wrong.  Would you know?

Answer
Hi Ben,
I think that your problem is either at a 4-wire disconnect at the left rear corner of the trunk close to the tail/stop fixture and turn signal fixture. The four wires in question are violet/black (to back-up lamp), white tan (to stop lamp), light green (to left turn signal lamp) and black/yellow (to left tail/license lamp). I would inspect that disconnect to observe for any damage or internal shorting of the wires on the four pins at both sides of the disconnect and then trace the wires in both directions: to the bulb fixtures and forwards as far as possible to try and find any damaged insulation that may have shorted wires together. If nothing like that is found, then I would inspect the tail/stop/ and turn signal bulbs and bulb sockets on the left side to try and find any bulbs that may be shorting to ground or which have contact wires that are bent out of alignment. One of those bulb/sockets if shorted will also cause the strange sort of behavior you are experiencing on the left side. Also examine the tail/stop/turn bulb holding fixture for signs of damage to the printed circuit board that connects the bulb sockets to the 4-wire connector. You might even want to replace all three bulbs at that location.
This has to be an issue with some short circuiting immediately in the area of the left rear lighting fixture itself. I believe it will be either a short between two wires, a short at a bulb/socket interface, or damage to the printed circuit board of the bulb holding fixture. You could try removing one bulb at a time to observe what malfunction are changed by so-doing as a clue to where is the source of the problem.
Please let me know how this works out.
