Chrysler Repair: Chrysler sebring not shifting out of park, chrysler sebring 2007, chrysler sebring

Question
My Chrysler Sebring 2007 will not shift out of park, what could be the problem. Car starts runs and have had no problems with it. Just got the oil changed the day before, not sure if something happened there.
Please help

Answer
Hi Sheila,
I wonder if the car is parked on a level ground, or if it instead is uphill or downhill tilted? Either of the latter will cause there to be a resistance to shifting out of park. Try to find a husky helper, in any case, to push on the car from the rear toward the front and/or the front of the car toward the rear while you try to move the shift lever, as that pushing may help to relieve the resistance to movement of the shift lever if indeed the internal parking lock mechanisim in the transmission is being jammed by a 'tilt' of the vehicle. Of course the parking foot brake should be released as well.
I don't know why it should have been impacted by an oil change...
The gear shift lever is attached by a cable to the vertical shift rod on the transmission so another approach would be the open the hood, that rod by jiggling the shift lever and notice what moves slightly, then mechanically try to rotate the rod in the same way the cable is attempting to do using s vice-grip or plier on the lever of the rod.
