Chrysler Repair: 1999 durango - fuel pump shuts off early when fueling, flap valve, diameter hose

Question
When fueling the pump shuts off automatically almost immediately.  Must hand pump fuel in and it will only take slowly.  Is there anything I can check/do with out having to take the whole fuel system apart?

Answer
Hi Chris,
I am not familiar with the exact design of your vehicle's fuel system, but there are two possibilities. One is a return small diameter hose that runs from the tank to the filler opening (small hole on the side of the input tube) which releases the air displaced by the filling action. That hose could be crimped so look under for a hose that runs along the outside of the filler tube.
The other is that there is a flap valve where the filler tube enter the the tank which is sticking in the near-closed position. You might try inserting a flexible metal strip down the filler to see if you run into an obstruction. If so and it doesn't release you will have to remove the filler neck to investigate. It may turn out that it is built-in to the tank and is not replaceable but maybe you will have luck clearing this problem.

PS Sorry for the delay as I just found your question in the 'pool'.
