Chrysler Repair: Power window of 01 Sebring Conv., sebring conv, continuity test

Question
The driver's side power window has stopped working. But when I operated the convertible top roof button, the window has moved down more than half way. I do not want to try the conv. roof button again to raise the window as it may bring the window down completely. If the window moved the roof button, does it mean that the motor is OK. Can someone please recommend a way to check for the problem i.e., whether it can be fuse? Can I manually try to bring the window up or try the conv roof button again in down direction to bring the window up? I will appreciate a reply.

Answer
Hi Vishal,
The 'drop' of the window is normal when using the power top and that is accomplished by a separate window relay/timer. It is designed to allow the top to not contact the tops of the windows when you raise or lower it so as to prevent damage. So the window motor itself is OK; the problem is in the window switch in the driver's door.
That switch can be removed and tested, and if found to not be making good contacts you can buy a spray can of electrical contact cleaner at an electronics parts store and using the straw applicator shoot some cleaner through cracks in the switch body so as to possibly clean the surfaces of the internal switch contact. To access the switch use your fingers or a soft wooden stick to gently lift up on rear edge of the bezel and also move it slightly in-board so as to release the clips at the rear that hold it in place. Then while holding in the rear released position lift up on the front edge of the bezel to release a clip at that end.
You will find that the switch has a plug/socket with 12 pins. If you disconnect the plug and have available an ohm or continuity test meter you should, if the switch is normal, find that when you push the button for driver window 'down' that there will be continuity between pins 1 and 8 and between 7 and 10. And for driver 'up' it will be 1 to 7 and 8 to 10 that show continuity. If any of those 4 continuity checks fail that means you need to spray the internal contacts so as to restore the function. If you can't, then buy a new switch.
My reference has been the '98 manual, but I believe it applies to your '01, and the '03 manual has the same circuit shown.
The power top will only automatically lower the window, not raise it. So you will need to fix the switch to solve the problem.
