Chrysler Repair: 3,3L/3,8L camshaft sensor location and replacement, camshaft sensor, gear surface

Question
Hi,
I own a 2006 T&C (bought new) 3.3L and so far haven't had problems. The check engine light starting lighting and the engine stutters. Took it to a check and the computer code is for the camshaft sensor.

So - I bought the sensor and now I'm trying to locate it in my car for replacement. I noticed you've answered a similar question about a different vehicle in the past. Can you help?

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Amir,
Remove the air intake box cover (inside of which is the air filter) and the air inlet tube. Then you will have access to the sensor.
The sensor is on the front of the engine, adjacent to the thermostat housing and below the fuel line that supplies the fuel rail, and it is also adjacent to the serpentine belt. It has a three wire plug, which has a tab which you lift to release the electrical connection. It is held in place on the front cover of the engine by a single bolt. The bracket that holds the adjacent a/c compressor has a hole in it thru which you can insert a socket with an extension and ratchet handle to give you access to the bolt for removal. After you remove the bolt tap on the top of the sensor to relieve the o-ring that may bind it at the hole, then rotate the sensor out of its hole.
Check the o-ring to be sure it is not damaged. Put the o-ring on the new sensor. Put a drop or two of oil on the o-ring. Check that the sensor has a paper spacer on its tip. Then insert the sensor and press the tip of the spacer down until it touches the internal surface inside, by feel (it touches the camshaft gear). The paper on the tip is subsequently worn away, which leaves the sensor close to but not in contact with the gear. Holding the sensor tip in contact with the gear surface install and tighten the retaining bolt to 10 foot-pounds (enough to keep it in the position). The reattach the electrical plug.
