Answer
Hi Jack,
Have you checked the level of transfluid in the transmission by means of its separate dipstick? It is on the side of the trans that faced the front of the vehicle. Make sure that it is at the proper level, don't overfill it, and be sure to use ATF+4 type fluid if needed.
If the level is alright, then you will need to take it to an independent trans shop to have the fault codes read out of the transmission controller. That will tell you something that will suggest the proper fix. It could be too low hydraulic fluid pressure due to a worn pump, a clogged filter, or other fix that doesn't require a rebuild of the unit. On the other hand, it could say that there is an internal part(s) that needs to be replaced. But the codes will be the clue as to what needs to be done.
Ask for the code numbers, what they mean, what they recommend and how much it will cost. Then write back and we'll compare that to the manual for that code number.
If you have a friend with a code reader you could get the codes yourself via a socket that it is under the dash, next to the steering column.
