Chrysler Repair: 99 Dodge Intepid, trunk lid indicator light, lid switch, trunk light

Question
QUESTION: a few weeks ago my trunk lid indicator light went out of sync, close the trunk lid, light comes on showing the lid as open,, pop open the trunk  the light goes out indicating the trunk lid is closed, did not think much of it till it started draining my battery .

ANSWER: Hi Ralph,
That is an interesting problem. I believe you may find that the trunk light is also 'on' when it is closed (you may have to get in the trunk to verify this, with a trusted friend to let you out!). I say that because the drain caused by the indicator light is so small that it would take much longer to drain the battery than the trunk light itself. One possibility is an issue with trunk lid solenoid release switch such that it is grounding the bulbs when it is closed and ungrounding when it is open. Or the trunk light bulb/socket may have a short.
The solenoid/ajar switch has three pins. The black wire on pin 1 is a ground. The tan/black on pin 2 is a common wire from both the trunk bulb and the dash indicator bulb which are seeking the ground in order to illuminate themselves, so they should operate in tandem, no out synch. The black/white wire on pin 3 comes from the body control/junction block and brings the current that operates the trunk release solenoid. Another possibility is that there is a short in the tan/black wires which occurs when you close the lid and it gets pinched, so check along that wire for a break in the insulation.
I will be interested to learn what you find after checking out the three possibilities.

QUESTION: well roland it appears i found the answer to my own question and it was something i did my self  i was putting some clothes in my trunk closed the lid , bent the lever on the trunk lid indicator light, here is where i am still a bit lost but you are the expert, heres the best i can tell you, the trunk lid switch is  3 position  very bottom *closed* ,mittle *open*, top *closed*. under normal conditions (with the switch lever not being bent) close the trunk, switch in bottom postion, open the trunk, switch in middle position, the trunk lid latch bar kept switch from going to the top closed position. went i bent my lever it was using the top 2 positions on the switch, instead of the normal bottom 2 .

thank you very much for your time

Answer
Hi Ralph,
Interesting in that the switch as shown in the manual just has two positions, for the internal contacts that control the dual lights. There is nothing shown regarding a third position for the switch though it may have something to do with the release mechanism which is operated by the third (black/white) wire. You may have to measure across the three pins for the three wires at the switch to understand what the three positions of the switch do. The manual is moot on that detail. Perhaps the third position prepares the solenoid to be activateable only when the lid is down, but why it would want it to be deactivated when the lid is open is not clear to me.
