Chrysler Repair: Neon 1998: Starter motor doesnt work, but relay clicks, neutral safety switch, starter solenoid

Question
i have no power going to my starter motor when i turn the key.when i run a wire from starter motor to battery it starts,i can hear a click from the relay  when i turn the key but nothing else.I have checked the relay and the fuses which are fine could you please help. Also would you be able to tell me if the ignition switch is in the same location and removal is the same as a ford. Thank you

Answer
Hi Dennis,
If the starter motor will turn over when you jump a wire to the brown wire on the starter solenoid then you know that the starter motor is fine. Similarly if the starter relay clicks then you know that the ignition switch and the park/neutral safety switch is OK. So that leaves the relay's internal contacts not conducting due to oxidation or the brown wire from the in-board most pin of the relay socket (30) to the starter motor solenoid is 'open'. Try jumping from the battery to that in-board pin and if the starter motor fires up then the relay's internal contacts have to be bad. Try swapping that relay with another one to verify that is the case. If the jump to the relay pin doesn't cause the motor to energize, then the wire is open.
If your starter relay clicks, then the ignition switch for that part of the circuit is OK. Let me know and I can tell you how to replace the switch if you believe that is the problem.
