Chrysler Repair: 2001 Sebring LXI transmission, obd ii reader, digit numbers

Question
My son was driving and upon turning off the cruise control the cars tranmission disengaged and got a check engine light.  Reverse or drive didn't do anything.  Got it home and with the engine off and key on, we switched from drive to reverse and heard a buzzing noise coming from the TCM.  Fluid level is good, red and no burnt smell. Do you think it's the TCM or the tranny itself?

Answer
Hi Joe,
The best way to diagnose would be to get a fault code readout from the engine and transmission computers. It might show up using the igntion key; "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then see if some four digit numbers show up in the odometer window. Let me know if so and we can go from there. If not, then either borrow/buy an OBD-II reader or (at a cost) have it towed to a garage. The plug-in point is under the dash just to the left of the steering column. There are just too many possibilities to guess on this one.
