Chrysler Repair: Chrysler ignition switch key issue, chrysler town and country, wd 40

Question
I have a 2003 Chrysler Town and Country that has an ignition that won't turn. For a while I've had to jiggle the key to get it started on occasion, but now it just won't turn.

I got to the point where I thought I could remove the ignition cylinder, but my understanding is that I can't get it out unless it's in the run position.

If I can't get it to the run position, what do I do next? And if I don't need to have it in the run position, what do I do next to get it out? Taking it in for a repair is not an option at this point since it is sitting in my driveway and the ignition won't turn.

Answer
Hi Chris,
I would try first turning the steering wheel slightly clock- or counter-clockwise and then try the key as the steering lock function can often interfere with the key lock.
Then I would try using some WD-40 or Silicone spary solvent with a strawtip applicator around the circumference of the lock cylinder and also lightly in the key slot to lubricante the lock cylinder and tumblers. Once you get it started then I would be sure take out the cylinder as you described (while in the run position, press on the lock tab on the side of the housing) and examine it for binding spots or excess wear. You might also try a new/unused key if you have one as the key may be worn out.
