Chrysler Repair: alternator removal: 01 3.5L, negative battery cable, chrysler lhs

Question
I have a chrysler lhs 2001 3.5 liter.  One night the battery light came on and then a few hours later i drove the car and then all the lights on the inside and outside starting flickering and then the car died.  I had to keep jumping it to get it home.  i need step by step instructions on how to replaced the alternator.

Answer
Hi Diana,
As I read the instructions and imagine the location that you are dealing with, it seems that if you lifted up the right front tire and removed the 'lower air shield to engine cradle' that you might gain more room or an alternative entry way to the bolt in question.
In fact as I compare the '99 to the '98 manual that order of removal appears to have been reversed. So do take off the shield before trying to loosen the belt adjustment bolt.

Hi Diana,
Here are the steps:
remove the negative battery cable from the jump post on the strut tower
remove the upper radiator support and relocate (this is the part that goes across the body on top of the radiator)
loosen the lower mounting bolt of the alternator but don't remove it
loosen pivot bolt of the alternator but don't remove it
loosen belt adjustment bolt
Remove alternator/power steering drive belt(loosen tensioner pulley lock nut, raise vehicle, remove two push clips holding lower air shield to engine cradle, remove airshield. loosen tensioner adjusting bolt until belt can be removed)
remove bracket
remove lower mounting bolt
remove pivot bolt
remove alternator
disconnect the plug on alternator
disconnect the battery wire and nut

Install is the reverse

Torques: 8mm alternator mounting bolt 30 ft-lbs
        10mm   "        "         " 40  "
        10mm       "      pivot    bolt 40  "

This instruction is from the '99 3.2/3.5 manual which should apply to your '01.

Also while you are at that 'thank/rate' page, please notice a question about "nomination to be expert of the month" which I am in competition to receive, being only 2 votes behind the leader! I would truly appreciate your entering a "yes" for me where you see that question.
