Answer
Hi Kathy,
Earlier this week you asked me a question about a problem with you vehicle. Now I need to ask a favor of you. I am competing for the honor of being the "Expert of the Month" for December. You can help me by going the the 'thank/rate' tab below and look for the question that asks if you think I should be so-honored. If you would select the 'yes' option I would be most appreciative. Please do this before 6pm CST tomorrow, New Year's Eve when the competition ends. I wish that your Chrysler vehicle is running well and gives you good service in the New Year!

History-
Hi Kathy,
In my experience the most common cause of this is that when you earlier put the shift lever in park that you were on a steep incline or had your tires pressed hard against a stopping block or curb. If there is a stored energy force (gravity or compressed tires), then that presses against the park brake mechanism's 'pawl' so that it gets bound up. If you may be in such a circumstance the best thing to do is recruit a helper or two to push on the car from either the front or the back so as to relieve the pressure that is binding up the mechanism while you simultaniosuly try to shift out of Park. For example if you are on an incline have them push the car in the opposite direction of the incline. If wedged against a curb, push the car further against the curb.
The other possibility is that if it is extremely cold that the mechanism may be frozen in which case waiting for higher temps may be necessary.
Please let me know if any of these ideas is helpful.
