Chrysler Repair: Electronic Tachometer, dodge ram 1500, electronic tachometer

Question
I am trying to instal a Electronic Tachometer onto my 1998 dodge ram 1500 v6 standard pickup. The instructions are wanting me to connect one of the wires to the negative coil terminal.  I have located the coil but I am not sure where it is talking about. Please send me pics or explain where I am to hook this wire to.

Answer
Hi Dustin,
As explained on the home page for this category I don't have shop manuals for the trucks/full size vans so I have to do some guessing about how the spark coil is set up for your engine. If it has 6 high voltage output posts, then the low voltage plug to the coil will have 4 wires. One of the four is a constant 12V supply wire (that is attached to one end of the primary windings of each of the 3 sections of the coil pack, it is probably colored orange or dark green/orange, or you could find out which wire shows a constant 12V while you are cranking the engine via the starter motor with the plug removed from the coil pack). The other three wires on the 4-wire plug are called the coil 'driver' wires and those are the ones that are pulsed one time for each engine revolution and they are attached to the other end of the 3 primary windings. I suspect that any one of those 3 wires will be appropriate for the tachometer connection.
Ideally, the tach unit will have an adjustment that will allow you to set it up for a 1 pulse per engine revolution 'driver', which if this were a set up for an engine with a distributor and a separate single-wire coil would be the same as the pulse rate for a 2-cylinder engine. Any one of the three 'driver' wires could be accessed for attachment by pushing a fine straight sewing pin through the insulation right where the wire enters the plug and then attaching the tach lead to the pin by soldering it. Or you could take a small gauge bare wire and stick one end of into the socket to one of those wires on the plug and route it out the edge of the plug/socket interface for subsequent soldering to the tach wire where it protrodes out.
That is the best I can do given the information that I have. I hope this is helpful to you.

PS Use the 'thank/rate' tab to get back to me with further questions. While you are at that tab, may I ask a favor? You will see a question about 'nomination for expert of the month'. I would appreciate your 'yes' at that space as I am in close race to win that recognition. Thanks in advance.

Hi Dustin,
How is it going with the tachometer wiring? You can use the "thank/rate" tab below to get back to me with any progress/questions.
I'm only 2 votes short of catching up to the fellow who leads the race to be 'expert of the month'. So if you would take a moment to use the "thank/rate" tab below to give me another vote, that too would be much appreciated. Best wishes for the New Year.
