Chrysler Repair: 1994 Chrysler New Yorker: loosing coolant but where/why?, coolant leaks, chrysler new yorker

Question
I have a 1994 Chrysler New Yorker that keeps going through about 1-2 gallons of 50-50 anti-freeze per week. I have put a new thermostat in because it would start to overheat but that wasnt the problem. I was wondering if you knew what it could possibly be?

Answer
Hi Steven,
If you don't see any thing dripping out from under the engine comparment and it doesn't boil out the overflow container or pressure cap while you are driving, then I would suggest that you observe from copious amounts of steam/white smoke coming out the tail pipe when you first start it from cold and if so when you let a bit of that condense on the palm of your hand does it smell like antifreeze. If so, than that is a sign of a headgasket leak from one or the other of the cylinder banks. The spark plugs would be the way to find out which side, remove and inspect. Also it is possible that such a leak will cause the oil to be cloudy/milky if the coolant leaks into the oil passageways.
That would be the first set of obasevations I would suggest. It has to go somewhere and if there is no frank coolant escaping then it pretty much has to be in a different state (vapor) that it is getting away.
