Chrysler Repair: back door latch, door latch, bungee cord

Question
QUESTION: A couple of weeks ago the latch on the back of my 2001 Chrysler van stopped working.  It won't latch the hatch door closed.  At first we thought it was frozen so we applied heat and it still wouldn't latch.  We then ordered a replacement latch from Mopar thinking that maybe some spring went out inside where we can't see.  After installing the new latch device it still isn't working.  My husband seems to think that its getting electric to it since all of the back panel lights work and the lock is wired to the same supply. Any suggestions?

ANSWER: is this a power door  or manual?  open on it own?  and we are talking about the lift gate or sliding side door?

QUESTION: You have to open it manually, and its the lift gate.  Thanks for your propmt reply, I appreciate it.

ANSWER: it wont lock or unlock with the remote? The door will open and close it just will not lock or unlock with the key or remotes?

QUESTION: No, the remote nor the auto-lock on the driver's/passenger's doors lock/unlock it.  I can hear the locks click but it doesn't catch on the hatch.  Right now I have the hatch kept shut with a bungee cord otherwise it bounces around opening and closing causing my interior lights to come on.

Answer
The latch is mechanical  and it still wont even close the door itself?
Did he put it in right?  what about adjusting the striker on the frame is it down to far where it wont hit the latch itself?  Does it look like it has moved from an original location on the frame?
