Chrysler Repair: 92 Chrysler Lebaron odometer, chrysler lebaron, tilt column

Question
QUESTION: I have a 92 Chrysler Lebaron. The odometer and trip meter doesn't work. The speedometer works fine. I don't know where to look for the problem. Can you provide any assistance?
Thanks
Roger

ANSWER: Hi Roger,
Yes, the problem is most likely the small gear (of which there are two) inside the speedometer head itself. The gear that usually goes is the one with '20 teeth'. You can get it at a speedo repair shop for around $20 or buy it on line from speedometergears.com for $25. Then go to the Yahoo autos group called TheChryslerLeBaronClub and look message #33980 for instructions on replacing the gear.
I have to do this too, on my '89 coupe!

PS Use the "thank/rate" tab to get back to me with further questions, without having to wait for me to be 'available'. While you are there notice the evaluation section where you will see a tab for 'nomination' (for me to be 'expert of the month'). Change the 'no' to a 'yes' if my answer meets your needs. I would very much appreciate that vote. Thanks

QUESTION: Hi Roland,
Thank you for your response. I read the instructions on the Lebaron website but I don't see the 3 screws on top he was talking about. Do you know if he is removing from under the dash or from the drivers seat position?
I also read something about a distance sensor on the transaxle. Is that a possibility on my 92> It is a convertible.
Thanks
Roger

Answer
Hi Roger,
I wasn't remembering the model year of that procedure. Now I think that was for a  pre-90 model. The '92 manual lists the steps:
Remove the switch pod.(Remove the center vent, find 2 screws hidden there; then I believe the there are 2 screws on the under surface of the rear part of the pod, outboard one on the left side and front one on the right side; these are accessed from underneath it appears)
Unscrew tilt column lever
Remove the cluster
Remove the mask and lens assembly (6 screws) Pull cluster mask and lens rearward.
Remove tach and turbo gauge (if equipped)
Remove volt, temp, oil and fuel gauges
Remove the speedo/odo assembly
Disconnect the pigtail from the cluster board printed circuit
I hope this is responsive to your needs.
Roland
PS If you would be so kind as to offer me a 'nomination' as expert of the month for November I would be most appreciative. Use the 'thank/rate' tab below and where you see 'nominantion?' change the 'no' to a 'yes' and submit. The voting ends at 6 PM CST today. Thanks!
PPS The distance sensor is used on the non-electronic 3-speed automatic transmissions. If the speedoworks, in either case, the sensor of the transmissions are working.
