Chrysler Repair: Radio replacement:96/98 minivan, factory wiring harness, roland roland

Question
QUESTION: Recently I replaced the stock radio with an aftermarket radio using the Scosche factory wiring harness. The unit would not power up, so I double checked the wiring diagram and it checked out fine. I took out my meter and tested the vehicle wiring to find that I had 12v on the Radio power lead, but no power on the constant 12v memory lead. I plugged in the OEM Radio and it would not power up as well. I have lost the ability to use the power locks without the key on and the dome light does not work without the key. I have checked all the fuses in the PDB under the hood and the fuse block under the dash. I have ohmed out the accessory relay and all test out fine. Is there another fuse or relay that I am not aware of?

ANSWER: Hi Wray,
I need to know the year, model, and body style of the car to offer you specific direction. It is probably the "ignition off draw" fuse  circuit (labelled as M1 in the Chrysler diagrams)based on the other things being out, but I have to know which wiring diagrams to look into. Also, the typical Chrysler radio uses the chassis as its ground with a separate wire attached to a chassis screw. That is probably not the situation for the new radio, and I would hope that the adapter takes that into account. Is there a ground wire (usually black) and what does the other end of the new adapter do for that wire? You may have to revise the grounding situation.
Use the "thank/rate" tab to get back to me without having to wait for me to be 'available' to take a question. There is a space there for comments, to which I will reply. While there, if you notice in the evaluation section a "nomination" tab, which if you would change to "yes" would add your vote for me to be 'expert of the month'. I would be very appreciative of that.
Roland

Roland, thank you for the reply. The vehicle is a 1996 T&C with the Infinity speaker system

Hi Wray,
I believe the '96 has the new power distribution box under the hood, and in that one the IOD fuse in by itself at the very back end of the box (#28). I will be back later today, but leave me a response at the 'thank/rate'. I thank you for the evaluation.

Addendum:
The '98 manual shows the radio has 4 plugs, while the '95 shows it to have 3 plugs and a ground strap. So which did your original '96 radio have and we'll then know which wiring diagrams apply. Sorry I don't have the '96 diagrams but one or the other my manuals does apply. In any case the wiring colors don't change. Did the scoche adapter provide connections to 3 or to four plugs, and what are all the wire colors is the only way to sort this out. Did you find the IOD fuse and was it blown? Let me know.
Roland

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: The OEM radio has 3 plugs but the Scosche adapter only has 2. I am unsure what the little plug with 2 wires is for. The IOD fuse was blow and after replacement everything went back to normal with the OEM radio installed. I found a diagram for the 96, but it still did not mention the little 2 wire plug. I will wait until I can find that out before attempting to install the new radio. Truthfully I thought that the IOD fuse was just a spare and didn't even pay it any attention.

Thank you for all your help. I was pulling my hair out trying to find the problem.

Answer
Hi Wray,
Earlier, last month, you asked me a question about a problem with you vehicle. Now I need to ask a favor of you. I am competing for the honor of being the "Expert of the Month" for December. You can help me by going the the 'thank/rate' tab below and look for the question that asks if you think I should be so-honored. If you would select the 'yes' option I would be most appreciative. Please do this before 6pm CST tomorrow, New Year's Eve when the competition ends. I wish that your Chrysler vehicle is running well and gives you good service in the New Year!
Roland

Hi Wray,
Let me give you a rundown of the plugs from the '98 manual which might be helpful to you. Let me know if this doesn't agree with what you actually have there and I can do the same from the '95 manual. The color assignments are likely constant from year to year:
There is a 7-wire black plug that is all for speakers so I won't get into that assuming the adapter does too. There is 7-wire gray plug of which the pins 1-3 are also speaker wires. Then pin-4 yellow/black is the variable brightness panel voltage, pin-5 orange is the brightness panel voltage when no headlamps are in use, pin-6 red/white is the 12V power supply wire that is controlled by the ignition switch (accessory/run positions), and pin-7 pink is the IOD output voltage to sustain the radio preset buttons. There is a black 2-wire plug with violet/brown and white/black wires that are the digital data bus wires that may have to do with remote control of the radio from the steering wheel if you had that feature. There is a black 2-wire plug with pink IOD wire, dark green/red wire that is a slightly different 12V supply from the ignition switch (off/run/start positions). I don't see that in the wiring diagrams for the radio, just as a plug, so I don't know what it is for. Finally there is a single wire black plug with a black/dark green wire that attaches to a male contact on the radio chassis and which serves as the ground for the entire system.
Let me know if these are identical or not.
Roland
PS Use the 'thank/rate' tab below to get back to me with further questions, to which I will respond. While you are there if you will note in the evaluation area an item called "nomination?", and if you would change the 'no' to a 'yes' that would give me a vote for November's 'expert of the month' award. Thanks so much for doing that for me. The balloting ends at 6 pm CST tomorrow.
