Chrysler Repair: 1996 Dodge Caravan 3.0L = 1997 Plymouth Voyager 3.0L?, plymouth voyager, voyager 3

Question
I have a 1997 Plymouth Voyager 3.0L with the same no-start problem. Could it be the same problem although there's a one model year difference? I know the vehicle platforms are similar.
I have no fault codes though... I can only get thye codes by holding the TRIP and RESET buttons down while turning the key to ON.

Answer
Hi Bob,
The code readout technique you describe is actually for diagnosis of an instrument cluster fault, not an engine/transmission fault. The only way to get the other codes is with a code reader that plugs in under the dash where there is a 16-pin socket next to the steering column.
If that is not practical (borrow a reader from a friend?) then you could verify a couple of things:
Does the fuel pump hum when turn the ignition to "run" for about 1 second? That is normal and would verify voltage to the pump and the ignition system is present when you then start cranking it over.
Are you getting spark during 5 seconds of cranking? Remove a spark plug cap and insert the tip of an insulated handle screwdriver all the way to touch the internal wire. Then hold the handle and the cap with two hands, and place the shaft of the driver 1/4" from the cylinder head or block and have a helper crank the engine while you observe for a spark to jump the gap.
If not, then I would suspect the photo-optic pickup in the distributor is bad. There are voltage tests you can do, or you can take a chance and buy and replace that sensor.
If you do have spark then I would check the egr valve located in a pipe that runs from the exhaust pipe up to near the intake throttle body where you will find a valve in the pipe that has a round vacuum operated top with a vacuum hose attached, the body is bolted into the pipe, and there is a flange with an opening between the two parts. Inside the flange there is a rod which is the valve stem, with a slot. Use the tip of a screwdriver to move the rod back and forth, against spring action in one direstion that tries to close it. Make sure it moves freely and closes by spring action to a dead stop. If not, then spray some WD-40 with a straw tip applicator on the the rod where it enters the body to free-up the action.
Then try to start it.
Those are the most likely reasons for a no start.
I'll be around for another hour or so, then back this evening.
