Chrysler Repair: 2000 Chrysler Sebring convert.:no speedo/poor shifting, chrysler sebring, turbine speed

Question
The car has 56,000 miles on it. I drove it to the store 3 miles away. All was normal. When I started the car up at the store, I noticed, as I pulled away, that the speedometer stopped working. The odometer shows 56,000 miles, but did not change on the ride home. The trans does not shift properly, & will not shift into high gear. It seems that the trans is acting up because the speedometer is not functioning. Is this a common problem to this car? What do I do next?

Answer
Hi Steve,
Those observations are consistent with the 'output speed sensor' being non-functional. It is mounted on the side of the transmission facing the front of the car, at the very end of the powertrain on the drivers side of the car. It may be easier to get to from underneath. It has an electrical plug with a tab which if lifted gently will allow for it to be released off the end, and then you simply unscrew it and screw in a new one to about as tight as a spark plug (20 foot-pounds of torque). It has an identical appearing mate closer to the front of the transmission (the input turbine speed sensor) at the same 'mid-level' height on the side but in front of the vertical shift rod rather than to the rear of the shift rod in the case of the output sensor. It costs around $75 plus labor if you have it done. But I doubt it should be more than 1/3 of an hour labor. Check it out and decide which way you want to go. That should fix everything.
