Chrysler Repair: Chrysler 300m 2002: downshift problem, chrysler 300m, diagnostic problems

Question
Shifting down gears is harder. It isn't smooth it has gotten rougher.

Answer
Hi Julie,
There are fairly simple possible corrections and then there are more serious problems that require significant repair. On the simple side:
is the engine idling at a too low or too high rpm (you would typically want it to be about 750 rpm),
is the hydraulic fluid level in the transmission proper (check the dipstick for the transmission).
At an intermediate level is the possibility that the hydraulic pressure in the transmission is off-spec or that there is some sort of an issue with the switches that control the movement of parts called the solenoids. These types of issues can be evaluated and if the cause repair can be effected at moderate cost.
Finally are the expensive problems involving internal parts which require removal and rebuild of the transmission. I won't list the possible causes at this point.
So my suggestion would be to note what your engine idle speed is, and also to check the level of the fluid on the dipstick for the transmission (which is a separate dipstick from that of the engine).
If both those are OK, my suggestion would be to seek a well-recommended independent local transmission shop (not part of a nationwide franchise) and take the vehicle to them and request that they do a fault code readout for the presence of any self-diagnostic problems with the transmission that have been logged into the memory of the transmission computer as 4-digit fault code numbers. Ask for the numbers, what they mean, what they recommend and for how much?
Then if you would like, write back to me with that information and we can compare that with what the shop manual say. Also ask if the cost of the readout (which aught to be in the range of $40) will be credited toward their repair bill if you authorize the work.
If there is an Autozone parts store near you they will do the readout for free, give you the numbers, but not be able to tell you the cost of the repair. But that is an equally good way to at least learn of any codes.
