Chrysler Repair: check engine light, p0406, side exhaust manifold, 2005 dodge caravan

Question
I have a 2005 dodge caravan with a 3.3l v6.The check engine light is on. I am getting a po406 code. What does it mean and how can i fix it?

Answer
Hi Melvin,
The 0406 means that the sensor on the exhaust gas recirculation valve is showing an abnormally high voltage (more than 4.9V). This sensor is on the valve which is located in a small pipe the runs from the right side exhaust manifold to the throttle body area of the intake manifold. Possible reasons are the sensor itself, the sensor signal wire could be shorted to its 5 volt sensor operating supply wire, or to the the battery voltage, or the egr solenoid might be damaged, or the signal wire or the ground wire for the sensor might be 'open'. So the best thing to do is go to the egr valve proper and inspect the soleoid's wires for possible damage/short and check the mechanical operation of the valve. The model year of your van is too new for me to give you specific wiring colors and pin contacts because of the cost of the manuals is out of my price range as a volunteer. But you may find the problem by inspection of the valve and its associated wires.
