Chrysler Repair: Radio/CD/Nav display will not light, chrysler town and country, soldering pencil

Question
My 2005 Chrysler Town and Country AM/FM DVD/CD Player/Nav display will no longer not light up. It still has all functionality otherwise. what might the problem be? Is there a fuse that controls this function?

Answer
Hi Kevin,
I don't have a manual so new as your year model. The '98 manual shows that the orange wire on pin 5 of the 7-wire gray plug carries the variable voltage to the radio display. I suspect things are unchanged, but can't be certain. Also, I assume the the display doesn't light even when the headlamps are on, correct?
You could pull the radio and test if that wire shows varying voltage as you move the dimmer control. If it does, then it has to be that the solder trace for that wire's socket pin connection to the circuit board inside the radio is 'open', or the display is faulty. So once you have the radio out, find where the pin from the socket meets the circuit board and heat it with a soldering pencil to see if that re-establishes a good connection. If the wire itself doesn't show varying voltage then you will need to trace it back to black plug at the underdash fuse box, pin 30 where it is spliced together with a meriad of other wires of those devices that have variable lighting levels. If all the other variable dash lights work, then that splice may be the area where the orange wire to the radio display is "open".
