Chrysler Repair: Simultaneous speedometer/shifting failure, input sensor, vertical shift

Question
200 Sebring JXI convertible.  Car suddenly wont shift out of 1st gear.  Noticed speedometer only showing 0 MPH.
Noticed trans a quart low, so added a quart.  tested it a mile,  still same problems,  then while testing around the block check engine light came on.  I can try autozone tonight see if they can read diag codes.  Any other suggestions?

Answer
Hi David,
That set of symptoms is consistent with the failure of the output speed sensor of the transmission. That would cause both the loss of speedometer and the lock-up in second gear, which is how the trans is designed to behave under various circumstances as a self-protective that is called "limp-in".
The sensor is located on the right side of the trans which faces the front of the car, about midline height. There are two similar sensors: the input sensor is located near the seam beteen the engine and the trans; the output sensor is located at the far end, to the right of the vertical shift rod as you view from the front of the car. You simply lift the electrical connector tab to release the plug, then unscrew the sensor. A new one costs a little under $100. Just screw it in about as tightly as a spark plug, reconnect the plug and the problem should be solved.
