Chrysler Repair: 97 Plymouth Breeze Wont start, spark plug wire, plymouth breeze

Question
I have a 97 plymouth breeze and it will not start. The engine turns over, but it seems like it is not getting any gas. What could it be and about how much will it cost? I my fuel injectors cleaned about 2 months ago. Also, my gas gauge keeps going up and down. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Brant,
Two things to try:
First see by chance if the fault code storage access might be available by using your ignition key: "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light to see it begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause, then repeat to be sure of an accurate count. This may not work because the self-readout capability was phased out around '97 but it is worth a try. If not then a code reader that plugs into a socket under the dash by the steering wheel will be necessary. The fault code is key to identifying exactly what is wrong. I assume that you hear the fuel pump run for about a second when you turn the key to the "run" position. If not, check fuse #8 ("ignition") in the fuse box under the hood near the battery.
The other thing to do is check for spark. Remove a spark plug or use a spare plug if you have one: then with the plug attached to a/its spark plug wire hold the threads of the plug against the cylinder head while a friend cranks the engine over. See if you are getting spark for a full 5 seconds of cranking or not.
Tell me which engine you have when you have done these tests, and tell me what you observed.
