Chrysler Repair: 2003 pt cruiser: acrid white smoke, liquid coolant, rotten eggs

Question
I have been getting wisps of white smoke from engine while stopped at signal, engine is idling.  When I accelerate, the smoke disappears.  The smoke stinks terribly, but not like rotten eggs.  I took it to my mechanic who could not find anything wrong.  It just happened again.  I don't know what to do.  Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Rae,
Where does it appear to be coming from? Under hood, out the tail pipe or ? When it happens have you moved to the curb and examined the area from which it seemed to appear? "...from the engine" is not specific enough for me to offer a diagnosis at a distance. If you can examine the engine moments after the release you might locate the source and the cause.
The area I would be inclined to examine would be the exhaust manifold/exhaust pipe as when some liquid (coolant, lubricant, hydrualic fluid) drips on such a high temperature surface it will vaporize instantly and produce a wisp of smoke. So focus on that part of the engine. You may even see some discoloration of the exhaust system metal at the point below the drip where the smoke is created.
Please let me know more if you narrow it down some. You can use the "thank/rate" tab below to reply without having to wait for an 'available' question slot.
