Chrysler Repair: 3.0L V-6 overheating, coolant temp, coolant temperature

Question
car only will run fan when it's at the point of over heating then it runs long anough to bring temp down little lower than half but will go back up if I am at traffic light soon after. I have checked radiator regulates fine.

Answer
Hi Judy,
That behavior would suggest that either the temperature gauge/sender on the dash is inaccurate or the temperature sensor that operates the fan is inaccurate. The sender and the sensor are different parts.
If you have evidence of boiling over or a measurement of the coolant temperature with a thermometer placed on the surface of the thermostat housing which shows you are approaching 240F when the gauge is nearing the H region then the gauge and its sender are accurate, otherwise not. If not, I would change the sender which has a violet/yellow wire and is located on the right side front of the engine.
If the engine is truly overheating but the fan does take care of it, then I would check/replace the temperature sensor that is located next to the thermostat housing on the top front of the engine and which has two wires (tan/black,black/light blue) called the "coolant temp sensor". It simply screws into the cylinder head so is easy to replace. If you have an ohmmeter, measure across its contacts which should read in the range of 700 to 1,000 ohms when the engine is at operating temperature. If not, and instead it reads higher ohms than that, then it would be appropriate to replace that sensor.
