Chrysler Repair: 1997 LHS subframe bushings/tie rod ends, alignment repair, frame alignment

Question
I recently had a mechanic (who I do not know as I am new to the area) tell me that all subframe bushings and tie rod ends need to be replaced and that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. He basically stated that the car was not worth the cost of repairs. Can you give me a general estimate of the cost of the repairs?  And as far as safety, what can happen if I must continue to drive the vehicle as is?

Answer
Hi Kim,
I don't have any time/labor cost estimate listings to calculate this very significant set of tasks. But let me say that I doubt very seriously that this evaluation that has been given to you is accurate.
How many miles has the car gone? And what sort of climate has it been in for most of its life? Before I would accept such a harsh judgement
I would go to a suspension/frame/alignment repair shop that is locally owned and not a part of a nationwide franchise because I think the odds are better you will get an honest evaluation there. What are the symptoms that let this mechanic to be offering you this advice. How is the car steering/behaving on the road?
I don't think this likely to be an unsafe situation unless the tie rod ends were extremely worn out which you could tell be grasping either front wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock and push/pull: in one side out on the other side and sense if there is much free-play.
So let me know why you even asked the mechanic or did he just come forward on his own to tell you this? I smell a shop looking for some work to do...or maybe not even do the work.
