Chrysler Repair: neon speedometer, fuel gauge, dodge neon

Question
I have a 1998 dodge neon that the speedometer doesn't always work, everything else works fine.  If you tap on the front of the cluster the speedometer will work for a while.  I have tested the speed sensor and get the same reading at the sensor and at the end of the wiring harness connecting to the cluster. I was wondering if there was a common problem with the clusters or a common wiring problem.  I had a 1996 neon that did the same thing and changing the cluster fixed the problem.  It is the common cluster with the speedometer, fuel gauge, and temp gauges NO TACH.  Any advice would be helpful.

Answer
Hi Eric,
I would remove the cluster and see if there is a ribbon-type wire connector from the speedo itself to the circuit board and if so clean and be sure that is making a good contact. That is the way the cluster is wired when the drive pulsing comes direct from the vehicle distance sensor mounted on the transaxle extension.
