Chrysler Repair: 01 DTC P0700: quick-learn procedure (diy), drb iii, accelerator pedal

Question
QUESTION: Short of A dealer or tranny shop can information be retrieved from the TMC. I am aware the above code is just saying that an error was recorded.

ANSWER: Hi Paul,
The 0700 code is from the tcm memory already. It suggests a problem within the TCM itself according to a '00 manual that I have. I know that at an earlier point it was suggested that if there were another code along with that one, the other code was the relevant one. If you only have an 0700 then I would lean toward viewing this as indeed a TCM issue.

QUESTION: Is it possable to replace the tcm with a used unit with out reprograming

ANSWER: Hi Paul,
The transmission operating characteristic needs to be matched to the tcm by what is called a "quick learn procedure" and the gear ratio/tire size has to be reset if the donor and the recipient vehicle's differ in that respect (called setting the pinion factor). The quick learn is stated to be a procedure using the Chrysler DRB III though in a pinch I suspect you can do it yourself by following some road test protocols. I can type in the protocols when you get to that point, later. Also, you will want to disconnect the battery for a few minutes to erase the 0700 from the powertrain controller memory at that point.

Use the "thank and rate" tab to get back to me when you are ready for the protocols and I'll give them to you at that time.

QUESTION: Hi Roland,
i installed a used tcm from a donor what are the road test protocols?

Answer
Hi Paul,
No guarantees this will be sufficient but give it a try:
Transaxle must be warmed up.
Maintain constant throttle opening during shifts
Do not move accelerator pedal during upshifts
Accelerate vehicle with throttle opening angle in the range of 10 to 50 degress
Make 15-20: 1-2,2-3, 3-4 upshifts. Accelerate from stop to about 45 mph each time at a moderate throttle opening angle.

With vehicle speed below 25 mph make 5 to 8 wide open throttle kick downs from to either third or second gear from 4th gear (4-3 or 4-2 for example).
Do the same with vehicle speeds above 25 mph do the same kick downs with part to wide open throttle position. Allow for 5 seconds or more in 4th, preferably at road load throttle prior to performing kick downs.

This should optimize shift quality.

Otherwise, a DRB III scan tool is needed to do this automatically followign a specific protocal that is programmed into its cartridge.
