Chrysler Repair: 99 chrysler T&C 3.3L:quits, recovers, 4 digit numbers, crank sensor

Question
What would cause van to shut down while driving and sometimes sitting at lights. When van cuts off its like you turn the switch off. Then when you try to start it back the lights come on on the dash but it doesn't turn over. After about 10 or so tries it starts(most of the time). Intermediate problem that I think has something to do with the anti theft but not sure. I have been a mechanic for about 15 yrs, but this one has me puzzled! Changed the lock cylinder, ignition electrical switch and also tried resoldering pins on back of the instrument panel?

Answer
Hi Chad,
I didn't see any mention of fault codes. Did you try with a code reader? You might get a readout with the ignition key: "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window to see if it changes from miles to show some 4-digit numbers which are the fualt codes. I would suspect an 0340 or 0320 which are for the cam and crank sensor being faulty respectively. These tend to fail as they heat up, then recover on cooling. If that key doesn't give any codes then go to an Autozone parts store for a free readout with a plug in reader to a socket under the dash. I don't think it is the theft system because that shows itself by allowing the engine to start, but then kills the spark, etc. in about 2-3 seconds.
If nothing of interest comes out in the codes, then check for spark and listen for the fuel pump for the first second after you turn the key on. At least you would know that you had both that way.
Let me know what you learn, please. Use the "thank and rate" tab to get back to me if I am not available using the comments section. I get a prompt alert and will send you back a follow-up answer.
