Chrysler Repair: crankshaft position sensor location: 2.5L V-6, crankshaft position sensor, crankshaft pulley

Question
Hi,
I have a 1997 Sebring convertible with the 2.5L.
I have the service manual from Chrysler and have read the posts and seen the diagram in the manual about location. I can't see it. Under the distributor? I can see what looks like transmission cooling lines but do not see anything that looks like the diagram.
Can you give me a hint on how to access this sensor? Test it? Remove and install? Any help would be great!
Thanks

Answer
Hi Jesse,
Have you removed the speed control servo from the strut tower? That is recommended in all the manuals I have about the 2.5L.
Then, the sensor will be found on the trans side of the engine/torque converter bell housing seam, below the distributor. It's tip is in contact with the flex plate that connects the engine to the input turbine of the converter. Once you have access to it and its wires you can test its function by measuring the voltage between the sensor signal wire (gray/black) and the sensor ground wire (black/light blue) which you can access with fine straight pins inserted thru the insulation so as to contact the conductor inside. If you turn the ignition to 'run' and turn the engine over via the crankshaft pulley bolt head by hand, you should see the voltage reading pulse numerous times per rotation between 5v and 0.3v. Now if the sensor is failing, you may not detect the disappearance of that signal until the engine has warmed the sensor up to engine operating temperature, which is why these often fail only after driving the car for 15 or more miles.
To remove it, you simply remove the bolt that holds it in place. It is positioned with the tip of it in contact with the surface of the flex plate, separated only by a paper on its tip which is immediately worn away but leaves a slight mechanical gap but still close enough for the electro-magnetic interaction. Hold it in contact and then tighten the retaining bolt so that it stays in that position.
If you reuse the old sensor, get a new paper spaced from a dealer.
Let me know, please how this works out.
The third wire of the sensor (orange) has 8 volts on it that does not vary, it powers the crystal.
