Chrysler Repair: 2003 Chrysler - Town & Country - Speedometer and RPM Gague Out, gauge conditions, transient signals

Question
the speedometer and rpm gague on my van don't work anymore for some reason. fuel and temp gagues seem ok as well as all the lights including fuel level indicator. the pin for both of the gagues is underneath the pin that they generally rest on, but i didn't see them spin all the way around. any idea what may have caused this?

Answer
Hi J.C.,
I am not totally familiar with the possible explanations for what you have observed, for lack of a manual more recent than 1998 (which I note in my claim of 'expertise' on the home page). But I do recall reports of gauge conditions such as you describe. I believe there can be transient signals that can drive the needles behind the pins. It may be that if you gently lift the needle over the pin that the gauge will work again. It is certainly worth a try. Please let me know if this works out for you. There are self-diagnostic tests that you can perform which will determine whether there is a fault with those two gauges. However, I would not believe they will be relevant unless the needle is on the correct side of the pin. So please try that first, then write back and I will share those tests with you.
To remove the cluster:
Remove the upper steering column cover
Remove the over steering column bezel
Remove the left end cap from the dash
Remove screw at left end of cluster bezel and headlamp switch
Remove screws holding cluster bezel to instrument panel from each side of the steering column
Disconnec clup holding cluster bezel to instrument panel from above right vent louver
Separate cluster bezel from instrument panel
Disconnect wire connectors from back of bezel
Then remove cluster lens from cluster
This procedure is from the 1998 manual. I hope this is helpful
