Chrysler Repair: 2000 Chrysler T&C AWD rear differential leak, weep hole, gear oil

Question
My 2000 Chrysler AWD van rear differential was leaking badly in January 08. I had it removed and all replaceable seals done at a competent non Chrysler garage. Now 6 months and 4,500 miles later I am getting some gear oil (not the red ATF-4 fluid)leaking on the driveway. Is it possible to repair this differential and have it not leak again? The mileage is 86,000 now and the van is never driven hard.
Thank you

Answer
Hi Doug,
Thanks for the kind evaluation and nomination. You will no doubt find the gear oil leak is coming from the rear weep hole (there is no oil but rather trans fluid to leak from the front hole), and in that case it means that the rear driveline module assembly has to be removed to replace the drive pinion seal, and also the rear overrunning clutch seal must be replaced because that too has to be removed to replace the drive pinion seal. There are 5 pages that cover thr module removal and the seal replacement. If you need them please let me know.

Hi Doug,
I would have to believe that you can repair the rear differential's seals. I have the '98 manual which has about 38 pages describing that unit and its repair. The analysis of which seal is leaking depends upon which weep hole is weeping, and what type of fluid it is leaking. Probably the best I can offer is to copy the pages and postal mail them to you. It would cost me about $4.50 for the copying and postage which you could later reimburse me for with about 11 forty-two cent stamps, after the pages arrive. A similar type of weep hole analysis applies to the power transfer unit at the front end, but I assume you have identified the problem as being the rear differential. Use the "thank and rate" tab to tell me if you want the pages and the mailing address to which to send them.
How about going back to the dealer and requesting a re-do of the earlier job?
