Chrysler Repair: Steering problem 2000 300M, excessive friction, question reservoir

Question
QUESTION: My 2000 300M w/ 120k+ miles makes a groaning sound when steering and the steering wheel "hesitates" or catches when returning to a straight position from both left & right turns.  The sound seems to come from the column just past the firewall.  It usually doesn't happen when first driven after being parked for a while but does get progressively worse as it is driven and the "catch" has become bad enough lately that I'm concerned about safety. Doesn't matter what engine speed is like the '99 300 from an earlier post. Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Matt,
Have you checked the power steering pump fluid reservoir? That is the first possibility (low on fluid) for both those symptoms. There are others, but start there, and then let me know if that is not the issue. Use only the type of fluid shown on the cap.  The reservoir is near the pump which is located on the left front of the engine.

QUESTION: Reservoir is between the lines for max cold and max hot after setting for 5+ hours.  Haven't noticed any liquids on the garage floor or anywhere else it's parked.

Answer
Hi Matt,
The other possibilities, for the "catch", can also be due to:
too low tire pressure,
lack of lubrication in front suspension control arm ball joint
worn lower ball joint
loose power steering pump drive belt
faulty  "      "       "  flow control
excessive friction in steering column or intermediate shaft
binding lower ball joint
worn front strut seat anda bearning or strut pin stuck in seat
excessive friction in steering gear
I would suggest that you jack up both front wheels and put the car on jack stands. Then you can start it and turn the steering wheel back and forth to see if relieving the friction of the tires on the ground has any impact. It might also help you to locate the sound of the groan or the catch more accurately.
