Chrysler Repair: 96 Cirrus crankshaft sensor: code 11, crankshaft sensor, crank sensor

Question
QUESTION: Hey, I've pulled the codes from my father-in-law's 96 Cirrus and got code 11- Symptoms are that the car shuts off while driving. If I were to change the crankshaft sensor, would it be easier to get to it from the bottom? Where exactly is this sensor? I tried spotting it from top, but I could barely see anything but a sensor mounted to the throttle body.. and two other sensors/wires that I have no clue where they go.. Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Dan.
That code 11 and shutoff while driving are consistent with the crank sensor failing. You will find it on the side of the engine close to the firewall, about at 2 o'clock viewing the engine from the left side of the car (but you won't see it from there I suspect, but just to give you an idea), positioned directly at the seam between the transmission bell housing and the rear of the engine, just above the transaxle extension housing. It has three wires:orange/white, black/light blue, and gray/black. It "looks" at notches in the flexplate between the engine and the torque converter. It has a single small bolt that holds it in place with an elongated mounting hole adjustment fitting. You begin by removing the speed control servo. Then you should be able to access the bolt.  You leave the paper spacer on the new sensor's tip, then install the sensor with the paper tip pressed against the surface of the hidden flex plate. Tighten the bolt to only 7 foot pounds to keep it in place.  When the engine rotates it wears away the paper and leaves the tip in close proximity to the surface but not touching it. Reposition the servo and it should solve the problem.

QUESTION: Hey Thanks for your quick response. Very helpful.

I found the location of the sensor, however I just wanted to ask for clarification on the procedure.

Does the speed control servo "cover" the Crankshaft Sensor? or is it adjacent?

Is the installation of the crankshaft sensor "plug and play?" or will it need to be spliced and rewired or what not?

Do you have a diagram of the location from an ALLDATA program that I can use to clarify the procedure that you've given me?

Thanks again

Answer
No the speed control servo is adjacent to the sensor, it is mounted on the left strut tower. Removal is suggested for better access to the sensor. It is plug and play, just lift the lock tab on the plug connector gently to release it from the sensor. Unfortunately the site doesn't have capability to show drawings, but once you find it, it will be clear.
Look for the sensor to be underneath the distributor on the 2.5 V-6. Remove the harness clamp for its wire from the heater tube. Then disconnect its plug, and remove it. Install the new one with its paper-covered tip pressed against the metal surface of the flex plate hidden from view. Then tighten the bolt to 9 foot pounds, rather than 7, but you will probably do this by feel anyhow. You want the sensor to remain in that exact position.
